Funeral Arrangements - Don Roby

COOKEVILLE — Memorial Services for Mr. Donald Claude Roby, 77, of Cookeville, will be Thursday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the service at the church.

Mr. Roby entered into rest Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 3, 1936, in Colebrook, N.H., to the late Claude George Roby and Eva Anderson Roby.

Mr. Roby grew up in Colebrook, N.H. He was an excellent student and was also a multiple-sports athlete while in high school. He then attended Plymouth College before volunteering to serve our country in the military. Stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., Mr. Roby became a member of the 101st Airborne Division. Serving under Gen. Westmoreland, he received a sharpshooter award and an outstanding field soldier honor. After he won his post-boxing championship, he humbly performed a week of K.P. duty assigned to him for challenging Sgt. Rucker to a boxing match, which Rucker refused. After 10 years of service, Mr. Roby left the military honorably, with a Sgt. 1st class rank. While serving at Fort Campbell, he met a beautiful Kentucky girl named Thelma, with whom he fell in love and married. They united in marriage for the remaining 57 years of his life. The Lord blessed them with four sons and a daughter. Mr. Roby worked at Indian Summer for 42 years and received a 42-year perfect attendance award. He enjoyed coaching his son’s baseball teams and watching his grandchildren.

His family includes his wife of 57 years, Thelma Tester Roby; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Terry Dale Roby and Robert Rex Roby, both of Crossville, and Bruce and Stephaine Roby of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Kayla, Isabella, Seth, Lynda, Donny and Jorja Roby; one sister; Evelyn Gionet of New Hampshire; one brother, Teddy Marois of New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by two children, Tammy and Donny Roby; and four sisters, Ann, Pearl, Celia and Selena.

Bishop E.C. McKinley will conduct the service.

Dyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hebrews 11 has become known as the "Hall of Faith." The reason is quite simple. The writer spends a great deal of time giving a role call of the heroes of the faith. After all, this chapter is about faith, and what better way to teach faith than to illustrate with some real-life examples. Mos of the people in this chapter are well-known, at least by anyone who spent time squirming in a Sunday School class as a small child, or who watched the late-night movies on the local channels featuring their stories. Lee University News Article: Dr. David Horton Dies Suddenly on Choir Tour: Funeral is Saturday Funeral services for Dr. David Horton have been scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the North Cleveland Church of God. The family will receive visitors Friday at Rush Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Dr. David Horton, a veteran member of the Lee University music faculty, died suddenly Monday evening following an apparent heart attack. Horton was in Nassau, Bahamas, on the first day of a post-commencement ministry tour with Campus Choir when he was stricken. His wife Virginia was with him as they returned to their hotel following dinner when he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to a hospital. "We are all stunned and deeply saddened by this unexpected loss," said president Dr. Paul Conn.
