Athens Church, Interim Pastor Appointed

Retired U.S. Army Chaplain (LTC) Jerry Moates, originally from Etowah, is appointed as the Interim Pastor of the City Park Chapel Church of God of Prophecy, S Matlock  in Athens.  Chaplain Moates currently lives in Cleveland.  The former Pastor Curt Aukerman and his wife Donna left their Athens pastoral ministry after serving the Church for 8 years in order for Reverend Aukerman to pursue his studies full time in the Medical Profession.

     Chaplain Moates served 27 years in the U.S. Army and 15 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard prior to his retirement. He served in the TNARNG in Etowah, Sweetwater, Athens, Nashville and Smyrna serving as an Enlisted Soldier for 5 years and Officer for 10 years prior to going on Active Duty as a Chaplain endorsed by the Church of God of Prophecy.   He pastored Churches of God of Prophecy in Birchwood and Athens and served as a District Youth Director and National Evangelist prior to going on Active Duty in 1981.  He is a graduate of Tomlinson Church of God of Prophecy College, Tennessee Wesleyan United Methodist College and Temple Baptist Theological Seminary.  

Chaplain Moates served the U.S. Army in a variety of assignments as Battalion, Brigade, Deputy Division, USA Artillery Group, V Corps Artillery, US Army Europe Forward National Support Element, Community and Area Support Group Chaplains.   His assignments included various Geographical Stateside locations including Fort Stewart and Fort Gordon, Georgia, Fort Polk, Louisiana, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, Fort McClellan, Alabama, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as well as Overseas locations including Camp Casey, South Korea, Tazar, Hungary, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Zagreb, Croatia well as Bueren, Wiesbaden, Giessen and Hanau, Germany.  

Chaplain Moates is excited about the opportunities and potential to grow the Athens congregation, reach the unchurched and interact with the Athens/McMinn Churches, Community, County and City.

Come Down From That Ivory Tower

Hebrews 11 has become known as the "Hall of Faith." The reason is quite simple. The writer spends a great deal of time giving a role call of the heroes of the faith. After all, this chapter is about faith, and what better way to teach faith than to illustrate with some real-life examples. Mos of the people in this chapter are well-known, at least by anyone who spent time squirming in a Sunday School class as a small child, or who watched the late-night movies on the local channels featuring their stories. Lee University News Article: Dr. David Horton Dies Suddenly on Choir Tour: Funeral is Saturday Funeral services for Dr. David Horton have been scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the North Cleveland Church of God. The family will receive visitors Friday at Rush Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Dr. David Horton, a veteran member of the Lee University music faculty, died suddenly Monday evening following an apparent heart attack. Horton was in Nassau, Bahamas, on the first day of a post-commencement ministry tour with Campus Choir when he was stricken. His wife Virginia was with him as they returned to their hotel following dinner when he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to a hospital. "We are all stunned and deeply saddened by this unexpected loss," said president Dr. Paul Conn. "There are few people who have ever made such a huge impact on the life of Lee University as Dr. Horton has made. He and his wife Virginia have poured themselves into the lives of so many s
